The Dos and Don’ts of Protecting Your Furniture

Posted by

Beautiful wood furniture lasts for decades – or more – when properly protected.  Our dos and don’ts will show you how to clean, protect, and preserve your favorite wood pieces to keep them healthy, looking great, and ready to be enjoyed for decades to come!

Do:

  • Dust frequently.  Even if you don’t think you see dust on your furniture, wipe it down with a clean, soft towel to remove any dust particles that are present.  Dust particles are sharp and will etch your fine wood furniture.
  • Be very selective about any cleaning product you use on your furniture.  Far more often than not, your furniture need only be dusted with a clean cloth.  If a stain occurs or if a residue is present, carefully research the safest product to use on the particular wood or finish in order to avoid damaging the piece.  Better still, call on the expertise of a highly rated furniture refinisher, or send the piece to be professionally cleaned and restored at a furniture restoration shop.
  • Use coasters for all beverages in order to protect the wood surface from water rings and condensation.
  • Use felt or cork pads underneath any lamps, vases, or other items you choose to set on your wood furniture.  Likewise, use a pad to go overtop your dining room table whenever you are entertaining dinner guests, so that the wood will be protected from hot pans, pots, and dinner plates.

Don’t:

  • Don’t arrange your wood furniture in areas of direct sunlight, sources of moisture or heat, or in any area where it can be damaged by its environment.
  • Don’t use a feather duster to dust your wood furniture.  As important as dusting is, if you use a feather duster, you could possibly scratch the wood with the stiff spines of the feathers.  Avoid sponges as well, as they can be too abrasive.  Instead, use simply a clean, soft towel, ideally a microfiber towel.
  • Don’t use water-based cleaning products on your wood furniture.  Moisture will damage the finish and can even warp the wood underneath.
  • Don’t use ammonia on wood furniture.  Ammonia will damage the finish, and will likely even damage the wood underneath.
  • Don’t polish the pulls, knobs, or other hardware on your furniture unless you have removed them from the piece.  The cleaning solutions used to clean these items can damage the wood.

Our best tip for protecting your wood furniture is this:  Find the best professional wood refinishing company in your area and trust the craftsmen to repair and restore your wood furniture when needed, and even to provide a high-quality cleaning from time to time.  Don’t trust your beautiful wood furniture to just anyone… Find a refinishing shop that specializes in protecting fine wood furniture and trust the job to them.
